When war started in Europe in September 1939, Fort Knox started a comprehensive testing program on motorcycles from different producers, among that the two protoype 'WLA' Models, rivaling Indian and Delco. The Harleys came through these tests with flying colors.
Between The month of january and March 1940, the united states Military purchased a lot more than 400 40WLA Models. The 40WLA Model was the very first kind of which you can be certain it was shipped using the term 'WLA' within the Engine Number.
