Flathead engines - Manufactured between 1929 and 1974. Flatheads was missing overhead valves. Rather, the valves went alongside the engine and opened up up up upwards in a chamber near to the combustion chamber. The benefit of a flathead was simplicity -- no pushrods or rocker arms, along with the mind is a simple casting getting a dent there for the spark plug. An average flathead engine was a displacement of 45 cubic inches (742 cc) and created about 22 horsepower.engines

Knucklehead engines - Manufactured between 1936 and 1947. The knucklehead turned up 60 cubic inch (990 cc) and 74 cubic inch (1,200 cc) versions in a position to creating 40 and 45 horsepower correspondingly.

Panhead engines - Manufactured between 1948 and 1965. The panhead also turned up 60 cubic inch (990 cc) and 74 cubic inch (1,200 cc) versions and created 50 and 55 horsepower correspondingly. Large versions including the knucklehead along with the panhead incorporated aluminum heads across the panhead and internal oil lines, instead of exterior lines across the knucklehead.

Shovelhead engines - Manufactured between 1966 and 1985. Shovelheads displaced 74 cubic inches (1,200 cc) and created 60 horsepower.

Evolution engines - Manufactured between 1984 and 1999. Displacement is 81.8 cubic inches (1,340 cc), along with the engine produces 70 horsepower. Even though the Evolution 1340cc is not anymore being produced, the Sportster® model type of motorcycles receives Evolution engines with 883 cc and 1200 cc displacements (manufactured 1986 to provide).
