1971 when Harley-Davidson Super Glide Intriduced first FX

Do you remember the year Willie G. Davidson went out on a styling limb with the introduction of the "Boatback?" If you don't the year was 1971 when Harley-Davidson Intriduced the very first FX Super Glide. willie wanted to design a bike that was sporty, fast and fresh with new fiberglass styling from the newly acquired golf cart plant. Unfortunatly when the FX didn't sell very well. Many dealers removed the fiberglass rear fender and seat and installed more conventional looking parts to make this" Edsel" sell. Harley reported selling a meager 4,700 FXs that year, most of which had the seat and tail modifications, which is why an original is so rare. Harley canned the Boatbackafter just one year, and in 1972 the FX incurred a dramatic styling change, with a more conventional Sportster style rear fender and seat. Now, 26 years later this bike is a rare breed and it's even more rare to find on e as clean as Albert lengths to restore this fine piece of Harley history back to its original form.

Moore found the Boatback some nine years ago in a wooden shed behind an old farmhouse. He recognized this bike instantly since he asked his grandmother to buy him one for a high school graduation gift in 1971. She refused and bought him something else (a van). Any how, after haggling with the bike's original owner, Moore loaded his newly acquired project, bought for a shameful price of $1,700., and headed home.
He completely disassembled the bike, stripped the paint from the frame and inspected it thoroughly for cracks or potential problems. He was amazed to find it in excellent condition and ready for factory paint again. Since Albert owns a chrome shop, we don't need to tell you how easy getting the chrome work was.
